Activities Locations

All of our activities take place in the Coniston area which is South Lakes, about a half an hours drive from the beautiful Lake Windermere and Ambleside.

We use a variety of different venues for each of our activities, to ensure variety and the right level of challenge for the group. For example, we have scrambling based or water based gorges, or gorge walking venues that offer a bit of both - each have brilliant qualities and offer a totally different experience. We will be able to cater for your specific group needs by advising you on the different locations upon booking.

Once a location is chosen for your activity day, we will send you full directions to the location, with a specific meeting place for you to park up and meet your instructor(s). River Deep Mountain High works in the environment and with the environment - keeping it all lovely and green and for everyone to continue admiring. The benefit in meeting you at the activity venue, means that we all reduce our carbon footprint by getting rid of any unnecessary travelling - and it means you have more time to jump (sometimes literally!) straight in to having fun!

RDMH Watersports Base, The Waterhead Hotel, Coniston

River Deep Mountain High's Watersports base for Canoeing, Kayaking, Raft Building, Team Building events, and (a little less watery) Archery - is the beautiful Waterhead Hotel in Coniston.

Our Watersports base makes the whole outdoor activity experience very easy and pleasurable. We have a boat house that stores our equipment, and offers a large changing room so that groups can get themselves in to their equipment comfortably and in their own privacy. The hotel grounds are beautiful and very well kept, allowing for Archery to be set in a peaceful woodland setting right on the shore of Coniston Water.

Read special RDMH customer offers and all about the benefits of stay and play at the Waterhead Hotel in Coniston.

We have a great relationship with the Waterhead Hotel and upon booking your activities, we will send you a voucher for you to enjoy refreshments at the hotel before or after your activity session in the relaxing hotel settings, at a discounted rate.

If your activities are based in a different location to the RDMH Watersports Base then we make every effort to make the surroundings pleasant for the group. We provide pop-up changing rooms if appropriate, and you can still take advantage of the Waterhead Hotel voucher on refreshments.

RDMH Training Centre, Lowick Old School

River Deep Mountain High have a beautiful office base/training centre in Lowick near Coniston. The majority of customers will not come to our Training Centre, they will be meeting their instructor at the activity location. We use Lowick Old School for our Outdoor Instructor Training and Skills Courses.

The RDMH Training Centre offers a large free parking area, toilets and kitchen facilities, a comfortable meeting area with learning equipment and a large hall that is perfect for conferences, outdoor courses such as teaching the theory elements of outdoor NGBs and First Aid qualification courses. Lowick Old School has beautiful views across the Coniston Fells, giving a true feeling of being in the Lake District.

Take a look at the view from the training centre on our Lowick Webcam
You can also see the lake where we go Canoeing on this Lake Webcam The little strip of grey beach on the other side of the lake is where we set off from. You can often see our canoeing sessions coming and going here.

Planning How to Get Here

Car
We are so easy to get to - just 20 mins from the M6 at junction 36 along the easy A590. We are within easy reach of Manchester, Blackpool and Lancaster and within 2 hours of Newcastle, Leeds and Glasgow!

Train
The best train stations to book your journey to be are either Windermere (especially if coming from the North) or Ulverston. The train from London and up the West Coast is now very quick taking as little as 3 hours from Euston! Oxenholme is the mainline station that serves Windermere.

Bus
Bus 505 can be taken from Windermere to Ambleside and Coniston
Bus X12 can be taken from Ulverston to Coniston
However bus services in the Lake District do not run much in the evening.

Taxis
Taxis are available from both train stations, they generally are waiting outside Windermere and sometimes from Ulverston. You can book taxis with Geoffs Taxis 01229 586666, McKenna’s Taxis 01229 582180 or Tour-n-Travel 01539 441 796, 07712 279 377.

For some holidays we will arrange pick-ups/drop-offs at train stations and will try and help out with this if we can. If this is something you would like to take advantage of, then drop-offs at Ulverston station are much easier.
