Course Requirements

The following characteristics are ideal for trainees taking part in the Outdoor Instructor Training Course:

  • Minimum age of 18 years
  • Motivated and Enthusiastic
  • Passion for the Outdoors and working with people (no cave dwellers)
  • Fit and Healthy
  • Willingness to learn
  • Some outdoor experience eg Duke of Edinburghs, Expeditions, Canoe club etc
  • Personal clothing and footwear (not wetsuits etc )
  • Attended interview day and passed application process
  • Character reference
  • NGB memberships paid
  • Attended Preparation Weekend or an Interview

Cost

Course fees:
2012-13 price is £6093 consisting of:
72% tuition fees - tutored skill development;
24.5% NGB course fees - including NGB course registrations and memberships; and,
3.5% expedition and climbing wall fees.
These fees include transport to the activities, use of technical equipment during training opportunities to borrow equipment once sufficient training is gained to log experience e.g. at weekends, and the use of a bike for the course, if you don’t have your own.

This does not include accommodation other than that required for expeditions. Accommodation in previous years has been at either a hostel or a shared house. Accommodation in 2011-12 was provided at a cost of £1600 per person.

Payments are staggered monthly from the 20th of September for 5 months after an initial deposit is paid to secure your place on the course.

There are payment options available and this training course is possibly suitable for a career development loan see www.direct.gov.uk/cdl. In some circumstances grants are available from your local learning skills council or enterprise agency such as Furness Enterprise in the Furness region.

Application Process

We are now accepting applications for the 2012 course. Next course starting September 2012.

1. Complete a Training Course Application Form.doc to start the ball rolling. (Compatible with Windows XP)

2. Attend a preparation weekend and/or an interview day. Interviews will be taking place on 26th and 27th May, and a preparation weekend on 21st and 22nd April. Please let us know if a different date would suit you better.

3. You will then be offered a place that you can accept or decline.

4. You will then need to pay a deposit and will receive pre-course preparation advice to advise on experience and kit you should try to acquire prior to the training course.

In order for qualifications to be gained and be valid, membership and registrations of the NGB organisations are required. All NGB course fees, registrations and memberships will be completed for you as an individual by RDMH on your behalf and included in the cost of the course but here is a list for your reference.
