Mountain Biking Skills Courses | Navigational Training in Guided Walking | Current Course Dates
River Deep Mountain High provides a range of mountain skills and safety courses from RDMH Training Centre in Lowick. The below RDMH courses are all run by highly qualified and friendly RDMH instructors, and include all technical equipment, a certificate and complimentary hot chocolate!
RDMH Mountain Biking Skills Courses
Please note that you may need to reach a certain standard to book on to a mountain biking skills course, i.e. certain courses follow on from one another. Below is a brief overview of the mountain skills courses that we provide:
Core Skills - Level 1
Trail Cycle Leader (TCL) pre-requisites
The main concentration will be on:
- Body Position - Weight shift and balance
- Wheel Lifts - Front and rear
- Stationery
- Moving - Climbing, Descending and Braking
All our Biking Skills coaches are MBLA qualified Mountain Bike Leaders providing the highest level of mountain bike coaching. All rides are based from our Lowick Training Centre and start by honing in on existing skills, and providing you with further skills. Then we ride local single track fell trails or forest trails to provide ongoing coaching. You will leave with an action plan and certificate, so you can return to take the higher level skills course (see below) at a later date.
We use cameras to provide constant photo and video material to help you see instantly how you are doing so that you can improve quickly, gaining maximum achievement.
Up to 1:6 ratio. Cost: £90 per day or £160 for a weekend per person.
Intermediate Skills - Level 2
Mountain Bike Leader (MBL) pre-requisites
Take your Biking Skills to the next level from our Core Skills - Level 1 Biking Course. You must be able to complete the Core Skills - Level 1 Biking Course prior to the Intermediate Skills - Level 2 or have the relevant skills and experience.
You will need to complete the skills in this Level 2 course on flat pedals. Skills include:
- Body position - Dynamic movement and transitions
- Wheel Lifts - Bunny Hops (both types), Step overs and Step ups
- Stationery - Lateral bunny hops, Maintenance and Sports Nutrition
- Moving - Drop offs and Route selection
We use cameras to provide constant photo and video material to help you see instantly how you are doing so that you can improve quickly, gaining maximum achievement.
Up to 1:6 ratio. Cost: £90 per day or £160 for a weekend per person.
Advanced Skills Level 3
Take your Biking Skills to the next level from our Intermediate Skills - Level 2 Biking Course. You must be able to complete the Intermediate skills - Level 2 Biking Course prior to the Advanced Skills - Level 3 or have the relevant skills and experience.
Biking skills include:
- Body position - Dynamic movement and transitions on the move in a fluid and continuous manner over very technical terrain
- Wheel Lifts - Use of all lifts at the right time and place to allow progress over complex terrain, Lateral bunny hops on the move
- Stationery - Sports Nutrition, Sports Psychology
- Moving - Jumps, Fluidity and Route selection
We use cameras to provide constant photo and video material to help you see instantly how you are doing so that you can improve quickly, gaining maximum achievement.
Up to 1:6 ratio. Cost: £90 per day or £160 for a weekend per person.
RDMH Navigational Training in Guided Walking
Walking navigation training and courses give you the ability to go it alone walking in the future.
We cover the following navigation skills;
- Using a compass
- Reading a map
- Orientation
- Taking bearings
- Identifying features
- What is, and what isn't, on the map
- Pacing
- Scale
- Timing
- Handrail features
- Contours
You will learn to use these and go away full of things to practice
The course is run from our Training Centre at Lowick Old School, where we can walk straight out onto great navigation terrain, from the door. Most of the course is outside and hands on, you can watch and read later in your own time.
We offer from 1 day refresher courses to 2 day courses right through to Mountain Leader Training for the experienced walker wanting to become a walking instructor themselves. Up to 1:6 ratio. Cost: £90 per day or £160 for a weekend per person.
Other mountain courses that we can arrange externally include:
- Mountain Leader (ML)
- Single Pitch Assessment (SPA)
- Climbing Wall Award (CWA)
- Walking Group Leader Award (WGLA)
N.B. Externally arranged courses need a group of at least 4 people to be initially interested for us to arrange the course and advertise for others to join.
Current Skills Course Dates
RYA Sailing Level 1-2+
Monday 2nd April - Thursday 5th April 2012
We will start with Level 1 on the Monday and continue on from there. If you already have Level 1, you can join from Tuesday onwards. Book for 2, 3 or 4 days - the more you do the more you'll learn. To get Level 1 and 2 would require at least 3 days. Once participants have mastered Level 2, any remaining time will start into Level 3, Seamanship skills and/or Racing!
Prices per person: 2 days £250, 3 days £350, 4 days £400
