Directions to Thurston (LA21 8AB)
From the North M6 via Ambleside, A593 and Coniston
Go down the M6 to junction 40. Turn right onto the A66 and follow until Windermere A591 is signposted to the left, just before Keswick. Follow the A591 all the way into and through Ambleside. As you come out of the shops there is a BP petrol station and the road splits into 2 lanes, follow the right hand lane and turn right, signposted to Coniston A593. Once you’ve left Ambleside you’re on the A593 and this takes you all the way into Coniston. Just as you enter the village, take the first left signposted Hawkshead. It is also marked with banners for Coniston sports and social centre. Follow this road to the other end and then turn left, over the humpy bridge. Follow this road, it will take you past the Waterhead hotel. Turn right, signposted Brantwood. Go past the Car Park on the right hand side and continue on this road for approx ¾ mile. Thurston is down a driveway on the right hand side signposted signposted “Thurston Experience”. (There is a peach house on the corner of the driveway). Thurston is an outdoor activity residential centre at the bottom of the driveway but you don’t need to go to the centre itself, take the right fork (ignoring the car park signs!) then turn right into the car park.
From the South M6 via A590 and Newby Bridge
Leave the M6 at junction 36 and follow A590 Barrow. From the A590 take the A5092 at Greenodd (signposted to Workington, Whitehaven and the Western Lake District), past the Esso Garage. After about 2 miles, take the A5084 to Coniston. After just less than a mile there is crossroads (by the Red Lion pub), take the sharp right turn (signposted to Waterpark), go over the river, and then turn left. Follow this road for about 5 miles, along the shore of the lake. Drive past ‘Brantwood’ and then Thurston is the next left hand turn signposted “South Tyneside and Thurston Experience”. Follow the drive along the right hand fork and park on the right.
