Go down the M6 to junction 40. Turn right onto the A66 and follow until Windermere A591 is signposted to the left, just before Keswick. Follow the A591 all the way into and through Ambleside. As you come out of the shops there is a BP petrol station and the road splits into 2 lanes, follow the right hand lane and turn right, signposted to Coniston A593. Follow this road out the village and alongside the end of the lake. Turn right, signposted Brantwood. Go past the Car Park on the right hand side and continue on this road for approx 1½ miles. Machells Coppice is a forestry commission car park on the left of the road, with toilets, just past Brantwood.

Exit the M6 at Junction 36 and take the first exit on the roundabout on to the A590. After 3.3 miles on the A590 take the slip/exit road towards the A590 (the road you have now left becomes the A591 to Kendal).
At the roundabout take the first exit on to the A590 (signed to Newby Bridge and Barrow - amongst others). After 16.9 miles turn right on to the A5092 (Greenodd, Coniston etc) – past the Esso garage. After about 2 miles, take the A5084 to Coniston. After just less than a mile there is acrossroads (by the Red Lion pub), take the sharp right turn (signposted to Waterpark), go over the river and then turn left. Follow this road for about 5 miles, along the shore of the lake. Machell’s Coppice is a forestry commission car park on the right of the road with toilets. If you get to Brantwood, you’ve gone too far!
