Directions to High Cross (NY332986), nr Coniston

From the North via Ambleside

Go down the M6 to junction 40. Turn right onto the A66 and follow until Windermere A591 is signposted to the left, just before Keswick. Follow the A591 all the way into and through Ambleside. As you come out of the shops there is a BP petrol station and the road splits into 2 lanes, follow the right hand lane and turn right, signposted to Coniston A593. As you leave follow signs for the A593 Coniston (and Langdale). After approx ½ mile, turn left onto the B5286, signposted towards Hawkshead. After approx 4 miles (and before you reach Hawkshead), take the B5285 right towards Hawkshead Hill and Coniston. Go straight through Hawkshead Hill. Just as you get to the top of the hill, turn left into High Cross, over the cattle grid and park anywhere on the right. Parking is free.

From Langdale via Coniston

Turn right out of the hotel and follow the road to Skelwith where you will meet the main Ambleside to Coniston road. Turn right towards Coniston and follow this road to Coniston. Just as you enter the village, take the first left signposted Hawkshead. It is also marked with banners for Coniston sports and social centre. Follow this road to the other end and then turn left, over the humped back bridge. Follow this road, it will take you past the Waterhead Hotel, the top end of the lake and then up a steep and winding road. Just as you get to the top of the hill, turn right into High Cross, over the cattle grid and park anywhere on the right. Parking is free.
