Directions to Hardknott pass (CA19 1TH), Eskdale
From Coniston
From the centre of Coniston take the A593 north towards Ambleside Turn left where it is signposted Little Langdale and follow this down the hill. Turn left just after the narrow bridge, again following Little Langdale. This road goes to Little Langdale and on through to Wrynose and then Hardknott passes. These are very steep and windy (protocol is to stop for people when you’re driving up) and so quite good fun as well! At the bottom of hardknott pass is a car parking area – there’s only one so it should be obvious. There’s no phone signal here so if you have any problems getting there please ring the office on 015395 28666 and your instructor will check in from the phone box if he/she is waiting a while!
From the North M6 via Ambleside
Head west along the A66 from Penrith, turn left to St Johns in the Vale and then south onto the A591 to Ambleside. Follow the signs towards Langdale and Coniston in Ambleside to get onto the A593. Approx 3 miles out of Ambleside. turn right where it is signposted Little Langdale and follow this down the hill. Turn left just after the narrow bridge, again following Little Langdale. From Langdale
Head out the langdale valley, past the Langdale Estate and take the next right to Elterwater. Go through Elterwater until you come to some houses with a small road on the right signposted Little Langdale. Turn here. This road goes to Little Langdale and on through to Wrynose and then Hardknott passes. From Ravenglass
Head out of Ravenglass to the A595. Turn left towards Whitehaven. Follow the road for about 3 miles and then take the right turn towards Santon Bridge. At the end of the road turn right and follow through Eskdale Green. After going through Eskdale Green and past the Outward Bound Centre, you go down a hill with a pub at the bottom. Go left here towards Boot and Hardknott pass. Continue along this road for approx 6 miles until you come to a cattle grid – the car park area is on your right. There’s no phone signal here so if you have any problems getting there please ring the office on 015395 28666 and your instructor will check in from the phone box if he/she is waiting a while!
