Alternatively, we can coach you in navigation techniques and train you to navigate yourself without the need for a guide or instructor, on our 2 day navigation training course, or a navigation refresher day, both with groups no larger than 6.

Guided Walking Details

With our experienced walking instructors and guides you can go to the terrain of your choice without worrying about navigation, map reading or what to do if the weather turns. We have guide rates or instructional rates depending on the level of service required. Walking in the Lake District is one of the most popular choices of holiday in England. The magnificent views and the luscious green fells, rocky high mountains and fresh sparkling lakes give you real satisfaction and something to be proud of when you return to the lakeland pub for a real ale or glass of wine.

Navigation training and courses give you the ability to go it alone walking in the future. We cover; using a compass, reading a map, orientation, taking bearings, identifiying features, what is, and what isn't, on the map, pacing, scale, timing, handrail features and contours. You will learn to use these and go away full of things to practice. The course is run from our training base at Lowick Old School, where we can walk straight out onto great navigation terrain, from the door. Most of the course is outside and hands on, you can watch and read later in your own time. We offer from 1 day refresher courses to 2 day courses right through to Mountain Leader Training for the experienced walker wanting to become a walking instructor themselves.

What do we do in a typical Guided Walking session

Guided Walking offer you led walking on the local fells (mountains, hills), showing off the best views of the English Lake District. We will often recommend walks you will not have heard of aswell as lakeland classics such as Helvellyn striding edge, and scafell pike. Our aim is to give you the confidence to explore and discover at levels you wouldn't have done before and go places you didn't realise existed to experience a real adventure.
With a walking day trip there is also the option of taking a linear walk, allowing much greater scope than if you had to walk back to where you started from. Our walks will always give you the chance to catch your breath with plenty of time to take pictures, soak in the view and find out more about what you see from your guide.

All our outdoor activity sessions include elements of fun, learning new skills, going on a journey, adventure and coaching. Each session will have one of these elements as its main focus, either because the activity naturally offers it, (eg. Walking a journey), or to tailor the session to the groups aims. Be sure to let our office/your instructor know if there is something you would like to learn, do or have concerns about. We will always remember that you are doing the activity as part of your time off and so your enjoyment will always be our priority.

Through years of experience providing quality outdoor activities we include all those small things that make your holiday so unique and memorable. Such as average instructor to customer ratios of 1:5 (so you have more time and are not rushed) complimentary hot drinks, and much more.

Premium Days

The Esk Gorge Walking Premium Day

The full day gorge walk in the Esk valley provides a fabulous playground of rocks, waterfalls and pools that can simply be enjoyed for hours. The start point is at the bottom of hardknott pass at around 10am, and the day begins with an hour’s walk up the valley to get to the main gorge section of the river for serious playtime and a spot of lunch in a very beautiful location, before the walk back to the cars for around 4.30pm. This day is one of our favourites – stunning scenery, remote location, fantastic jumps that reach upto 8 meters high, pools and there’s even a hidden lagoon. It is a more strenuous day than our other gorge walks and this is reflected in a minimum age of 14 years old.

Adventure Days

Abseil and Scramble Adventure Day

This Abseiling and Scramble Adventure Day is a rewarding adventurous, adrenaline packed day! The day begins with a scramble up Raven Cragg, which includes some walking and Single Pitch climbing - within half an hour you will begin to admire the beautiful views across Coniston and over to Helvellyn. With maginificent views to set up camp for a spot of lunch, there really are some great photo opportunities. For the afternoon, a walk over to Cathedral Quarry which offers the chance to explore old mining caves and tunnels, and gives the choice of different height abseils. Once you have completed the challenge of lower yourself down the rock face, with the rush of adrenaline, a short walk brings you back to the starting point.

The Climbing adventure day consists of Climbing, Scrambling and Abseiling around the Pike O'Blisco, or comparable venue, with the option of a walk to the top to see the fantastic views.
